Description of the stages

Lou Viage (Occitan word for "journey") is an itinerary divided into 19 sections, which runs through all the fourteen municipalities of the Stura valley. For those wishing to deal with only part of the route, there have been designed some shortest paths in a ring form. The trail was an initiative of the Community of Valle Stura and house of the Association, formed in 2004 with the aim of enhancing the area of the valley it goes through, and to promote the responsible tourism and the eco-friendly one. Lou Viage is synonymous not only with the nature and the mountains, but also in history and culture. Along the way you will encounter important places, such as the Memorial of the Deportation in Borgo San Dalmazzo, the Forte Albertino of Vinadio, the Living Museum of Pastoralism in Pontebernardo, the Sanctuary of Sant'Anna di Vinadio and the Sanctuary of Montserrat.

Vinadio / Refuge Neraissa

Travel time: 3h 30’
Difference or level: 650 m
At the moment the stopping place of Neraissa is not yet accessible, so you have to expect a single stage from Vinadio to Elder, omitting the ascent to the fort and the Monte Neghino Nebius (the latter is feasible the next day from Elder). You will then begin taking the riute directly to Neraissa valley through the "Portassa" Albert's Fort. Wanted by King Carlo Alberto and built between 1834 and 1847, the Fort is a masterpiece of engineering and military technique. Today it houses the multimedia route Mountains in Motion, whose installations invite you to revisit the past of mountain culture to reflect on the present and move in space and time to "feel" that original interaction between places and people, between the nature and the history when the Alps have become a cradle of mountain culture. You will have to pass a church and a little further, in a bend, turn right onto a dirt road, continuing parallel to the river, where you rejoin the height of a bridge to the route described below. From Vinadio you take away Divisione Cuneense, which at the end of the village turns towards the North-East uphill and after about 500 meters you will find a dirt road on the left and you will have to take it. With a series of switchbacks you will proceed to a steep slope. The dirt road ends in a large and panoramic area surrounding the small fort Neghino, which was used to spot any attacks from upstream to the Fort of Vinadio. Behind the fort the road turns back into a small path which turns to the north, initially in a slope parallel and then slightly downhill towards the valley side of Rio de Bourbon. The trail continues to the stream of Rio de Bourbon and traverses it, reaching the downstream side of Neraissa. This leads to the ruins of Lentre of Adrecchio and, once you exceed the rio Neraissa, then meet a bridge that turns into a road that takes you uphill to the right until you reach the ruins of Lentre Soprano (1.162m). Once at the end of the village, you should not take the wide path that winds perpendicularly to the north, but the left one, narrower and steeper. The path gets more and more scenic and free of plants and shrubs, as long as you first reach a pylon and then the ruins of Castellar (1.370m). The trail continues into the village and ends at the paved road, the one that was abandoned before to go to Lentre. After a determined curve, the landscape changes again clearly and you can climb to a flat at high altitude where Mount Nebius (2,600 m) can be spotted, in the background. Shortly before arriving at the village of Neraissa Inferiore on the left side of the road you can see a stone building, the old village bakery. The stopping place here is taken directly at the chapel of the village.
